Last week, I went to Society Dining Lounge in Yaletown with
a couple of my girl friends, Trixie, Rae, FW, Pooh, and Sis. This restaurant is
operated by Glowbal Group, which has other restaurants under their name such as
Italian Kitchen, Trattoria, Coast, Sanafir, and Glowbal Afterglow. In the past,
I’ve really enjoyed dining at the other Glowbal Group restaurants so I was
excited to try yet another one.
The decor was uber modern and quite girly if I say so
myself. There was a lot of pink...even the chandeliers were pink! The
atmosphere is perfect for a girl’s night out. ;)
The menu was uncomfortably huge and took up most of the
table. Their prices seemed reasonable from a glance, and their spiked
milkshakes menu was intriguing.
Rae, Pooh, and I ordered the Candy Collins drink to start. I forgot what was in it, but it sure
looked and tasted good! When our server brought these out, our eyes lit up in amazement because who doesn’t love cotton candy?!
Eating it sure brings me back to my
childhood days... When we were all full from the candy, I took the remaining
and let it dissolve into my drink to sweeten it.
FW ordered the Strawberry
Cheesecake Spiked Milkshake ($8.95) which contained strawberry puree, cream
cheese, and crème de cacao. Boy was it thick and indulgent. FW seemed to like
it because she finished all of it.
First off, Pooh and I shared the Kobe Beef Taquitos ($9.95) as our appy. They come with spicy
tomato sauce, sour cream, and a “herb salad”.
The taquito was very delicious but also quite oily at the
same time. I'd definitely get this again (regardless of the oiliness :P). I hate to say this, but everything after this started
to go downhill...
Rae and Trixie ordered the Chicken Gnocchi ($17.95) and had different opinions regarding the
dish. Trixie, who has never had gnocchi before, thought it tasted pretty good,
while Rae, an avid lover of gnocchi thought it was terrible. I had a bite and
I agree with Rae.
The gnocchi was way overcooked which resulted in balls of
mashed potatoes. It didn’t have the perfect chewy texture that good gnocchi is
suppose to have.
Sis ordered the Ahi
Tuna Casserole ($18.95) which consisted of a casserole made of shiitake
mushroom cream, sweet peas, and macaroni, underneath seared ahi tuna. This was also
kind of a fail because the ahi tuna tasted off... None of us could pinpoint what it
was, but it just didn’t taste right.
Pooh and I ordered the Lobster
Shepherd’s Pie ($18.95) because it just sounded so interesting and unique!!
Needless to say, I have never tried lobster shepherd’s pie before this but I think I’ll
stick to my regular beef ones from now on. Hehe...
It wasn’t bad! But it wasn’t great either. The lobster
mixture on the bottom was incredibly runny and difficult to eat with a fork. Pooh, on the other hand, was perfectly fine with it so I guess it is really up to your personal preference. To me, it felt like soup underneath the mashed potatoes.
I do give them props for giving us so much lobster though.
It didn’t make me feel as ripped off for paying $18.95 for something that was
just ‘meh’.
Based on these reasons:
- technically affordable, but it's overpriced based on the below par quality
- very trendy and modern atmosphere
- their specialty drinks (ex. Candy Collins) and spiked milkshakes are worth a try
- good place to come just for appys and drinks with your girl friends
- very close to the Yaletown-Roundhouse skytrain station
Service Rating: 4/5
Food Rating: 3/5
Price: $$$ ($20-$30)
Overall Rating: 3/5
Happy Eating!

ReplyDeleteIt is the same as asking "who doesn't like cupcakes?". All women will say they like them. Unless it is something on the lines of bacon maple cupcakes, men can be broken down into these categories:
1) Still too young to care.
2) Men dating women, whom, in this case, they are "afraid" to tell their date/significant other they don't like it.
3) Men who aren't afraid to speak out, in which case, they simply don't like them.
So, back to your question, who doesn't like pink cotton candy? Men. If there was a guy with guts in that party (which, of course, it won't have been a girls night out), he would have told you that!
Having said all that, like most Glowbal restaurants, it is expensive and hyped. Society happens to be the bottom of their totem pole, IMO.
Haha, I agree that a lot of men don't enjoy cotton candy as much as girls do. But I bet a lot of them do secretly like cotton candy because it reminds them of their childhood days at the amusement park.
ReplyDeleteI am actually planning to do a dineout here since it's only $18/person. That cotton collins drink looks interesting! So what exactly is in it other than the cotton candy part?
ReplyDeleteI saw it on the dine out menu too! Let me know how it is because I thought their menu items were pretty good.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what is in it actually but it was quite tasty! It's a girly drink so I think you'll like it :D
Ok... had Dine Out there. I don't really regret going, but wouldn't recommend it. The appy and entree were SO SMALL. Like 2 bites it's gone. I'd rather they do a $28 menu and actually give us enough food.
ReplyDeleteOh wowww okay then good thing I didn't choose this place for dine out. I always get angry if the dishes are super small cause i hate leaving a restaurant still hungry or not satisified!
