Eating With Kirby: Port Coquitlam

Mosaic Bar and Grille- Italian Chef Tasting Menu

The barely cooked runny yolk is meant to be popped and enjoyed along with the risotto...and enjoy I did. The golden lava coated every kernel of rice with its warm embrace and made the risotto that much more comforting.

Adorabelle Tea Room- Catching Up With the Girls

This is an Onion, Chive, and Bacon Savoury Cupcake. Even the icing was savoury! It was super delicious and was really innovative. Overall, the ambiance was great (loved the fake sky ceiling!), food was well thought out and executed, and the service was attentive.

Forage- Pretty Decent Food.

All six of us ordered their Award Winning Seafood Chowder with soft poached quail egg and crispy pork rind. While the soup was smokey, full of flavour, it was too thick and tasted a bit more like sauce than soup. The quail egg added a certain richness to the soup too which was nice.

Jethro's Fine Grub- That's Some Tasty Grub.

Overall, Jethro’s is an awesome breakfast and lunch diner serving up good eats with a twist. I most definitely will return for some alligator nuggets or pancakes!

Teppan Kitchen and Mambo Cafe (Aberdeen Food Court)- Crazy Sauce.

They serve this to you with a little sleeve around the plate to catch any splattering oil that radiates from the oven hot iron plate. If you are noob (hehe) at this Teppan Rice business, you can read the "How To Cook" instructions on the sleeve.

Basho Cafe - Quaint, Cozy, Delicious

You get the real deal here when it comes to their Matcha Latte. Served in a traditional Japanese bowl the way its suppose to be (not cup), its not only fragrant but it has incredibly depth. Be forewarn, this latte isn't sweet. There is no additional pre-sweetened sugary stuff here.

Hearthstone Pizza - Unlimited Toppings!!

Situated near my favourite Jimjilbang (Korean Spa) and the beloved Sushi K, is a little known pizza joint called Hearthstone Pizza. They make custom artisan pizza using a traditional stone oven at 600 Celsius.

Hearthstone is located in Port Coquitlam so it was a little far for me. But it was definitely well worth the drive.

What's unique about this pizza place is that you can create your own pizza  by picking your dough, sauce, and toppings. And there is no limit to your toppings. Say what?!

For sauces, you can choose from red sauce, white sauce, bbq sauce, and extra virgin olive oil (EVOO).

Their endless selection of veggie and meat toppings.

One thing I love about their topping choices is that you can choose from different kinds of cheese. I got the mozzarella and ricotta cheese and they were both marvelous.

Fonzor and I shared a Regular ($8.95) with red sauce, artichokes, mozzarella, ricotta, mushrooms, meatball, italian sausage, and garlic. We actually wanted to get spinach as well but we felt like we chose too many toppings already. :P

Fonzor and I really loved the pizza! The crust wasn't thin nor thick crust which was perfect. It was just enough to give usthat crunchy breadstick in the end without it being greasy or oily.

Since Rae doesn't eat cheese, she got a Small ($6.95) with just barbecue sauce, spinach, chicken, meatball, and red onion.

Her flavour combinations were better because Fonzor and I randomly chose ingredients whereas she tried to replicate the delicious Waikiki Pizza from Coconut Kenny's.

I can't rave about this place enough. I honestly wish it was closer to home because I'd visit them every week for take out. It's affordable, healthy, yummy, and it's always a good thing to support local small businesses. :) The owners Andrew and Frank are also very kind and friendly so go there now and say hi!

Sushi K Kamizato - Oh. Oh. You're Beautiful

I don't know why but when I saw this picture, the song "#Beautiful" by Mariah Carey came into my head. So there you go, the title for this post is "Oh. Oh. You're Beautiful". It is a beautiful looking piece of toro.

Diana (foodology) and Amy (foodqueen) have often raved about this suburban Japanese sushi joint called Sushi K Kamizato and it was their mission to spread the word to as many people as they could. Curtis (foodobyte) and I were summon by them on a beautiful Sunday evening to give their items a try.

Sushi K Kamizato is located in Port Coquitlam, unusual location for an authentic, modern, Japanese restaurant. I would have imagined this restaurant to be somewhere in downtown Vancouver or Richmond. Nevertheless, I made the long trek up to Poco and to be honest, it is probably the farthest I've ever travelled for food. The journey was a good hour and a half from where I live.

They started us off with some complimentary Salmon and Tuna Karaage. It was nice but I little dry on the inside.

This is called Tuna Four Ways ($9.95) and I don't believe its on the menu (Diana and Amy did all the ordering since they were regulars). Chef Keith prepares tuna using four different culinary techniques and it should be eaten in a specific order. The first preparation was cubed tuna sashimi dressed in a special marinade.

Next is tuna tataki followed by another tuna sashimi mixture, and then lastly, fried tuna. If you are a a fan of fresh tuna, this is a must order item!

Being a huge fan of Miku and Minami, I think you already know that I like all torched sushi, so when I heard Sushi K also torches sushi, I was ecstatic. This Torched House Roll ($7.95) was my favourite item of the night just because of the torched mayo on top. It gave the roll such a smokey, buttery flavour that my taste buds were in heaven. I can easily down two to three of these rolls myself.

The Aburi Toro ($3.25 ea) and Aburi Saba ($2.25 ea) were also lightly torched on the top to seal in flavour.

I don't think there is a better word for describing this piece of toro than 'melt-in-your'mouth'. It LITERALLY melts, in your mouth. No teeth required. Must order item.

They had some fresh New Zealand Tai ($21) available that day so we got it based on the owner's recommendation. The fish was definitely fresh but I didn't find the texture or flavour to be outstanding. Probably wouldn't get this again.

I believe this was the Tri City Roll ($8.95). I liked how all of the rolls have their own sauces so soy sauce is not required.

The Oceanwiser Roll ($9.50) consists of raw ebi, salmon, and cucumbers topped with avocado and more salmon. The dusting of grounded black sesame was a nice touch because it gives it a great textural contrast.

As you know, we food bloggers eat like massive cows so we obviously had more food. The Let It Beef Roll ($10.95) consisted of semi raw slices of beef on top of a sushi roll filled with cream cheese and cucumbers. It tasted very similar to the roll Minami is so famous for. Very delicious and highly recommended.

This beauty is called Tuna Caramel ($2.95 ea) and it essentially is tuna (toro?) wrapped around more mashed tuna and ponzu mixture, topped with course sea salt. The end result is a very earthy, caramely tasting tuna which was really odd considering this was a savoury item, but cool in that you would never be able to get this anywhere else.

Overall, Sushi K Kamizato was worth the drive to Poco and I am very glad to have tried those items out. If I am ever in the area or even semi-nearby like North Burnaby, I may just have to go back again.

Jimoco Cafe & Pasta- My LOVE of Korean Style Pasta!!

Ever since "Bistro The Home" closed down, I've been trying to find a replacement for my beloved Korean style pasta. Now that I came back from two months of living in Korea, my craving for Korean style pasta is even greater! I was determined to find a place and Jimoco Cafe & Pasta was my calling.

Jimoco Cafe & Pasta is located in Coquitlam (kinda far from where I live, Richmond) and they serve up 2-for-1 pastas everyday! I read a few posts on this place before and everyone seemed to like it so I dragged Meta Knight to come here with me one day.

All the pastas were around the $16.95 range which is kind of expensive in my opinion, so I'm glad they have the 2-for-1 pasta special everyday.

The most raved pasta dish in Jimoco is called Linguine Soul ($16.95) and it is a take on Korean spaghetti. Essentially, it is seafood tossed in a spicy tomato sauce. But the cool thing about this dish is that it is served on a hot bowl/plate so it comes sizzling and boiling when it reaches your table.

There were exactly 2 clams, 2 mussels, 3 prawns, and a bunch of scallops (yes I counted..=.=). Not an abundance of seafood but not too bad. As for the pasta, I was pleasantly surprised that the pasta was still al dente even though it was kept warm for a long time. Both Meta Knight and I loved this dish. Thumbs up!

Because I knew the hot plate would be a larger serving (hehe I'm greedy like that :P), we ordered the Risotto al Filetto di Manzo ($16.95) which also came on a hot plate.

The risotto had peas, mushrooms, and beef chunks in a creamy white sauce.

Again, I was surprised at how they managed to get the texture of the arborio rice perfectly right. Risotto is always tricky as the grain can easily be undercooked or mushy if cooked wrong (no one wants rice pudding!). So anyways, props to them. :D

Overall, I think I found my 'Bistro The Home" replacement, guys. I don't even care that it's so freaking far away from my house (1 hr drive at least!!). It's good, it's tasty, I'll come back again. Let's just hope they don't continue to skimp on the seafood ingredients or take away the 2-for-1 deal.

Based on these reasons:
  • great mum and pop korean pasta restaurant
  • they know how to cook spaghetti perfectly
  • pretty good deal when it's 2-for-1 (ends up being around $11 per person)
  • located in Coquitlam so might be a bit far away for some people

Applebee's Neighbourhood Bar & Grill- Not Coming Back To This Location Again

After a great camping trip at Golden Ears, my friends and I decided to hit up Applebee's in Port Coquitlam for a quick breakfast. Too bad none of us knew that Applebee's stopped serving breakfast many years ago. :( We reluctantly agreed to order from the lunch menu.

Meta Knight ordered the Hand-Battered Fish & Chips ($11.99) and it was not very impressive. It came with one piece of fried haddock, cole slaw, fries, and tartar sauce. The fish was over battered, the fries were average, and the cole slaw tasted pre-made. Definitely not worth $11.99. I'd rather get fish and chips from Pajo's in Steveston.

This came from the "Pick 'N Pair Lunch Combo" in which you choose a soup and salad, soup and sandwich, or salad and pasta. You can check out the menu here. I ordered the French Onion Soup and Spicy Shrimp Rollup for about $7.99 (can't totally remember).
