Matsuyama- Best To Come Here For Late Night Sushi

Every time Meta Knight and I finish watching a movie around 9pm and want to grab some late night dinner, we always have problem finding restaurants that are still open. We usually resort to Matsuyama because we know that they will be open for sure. They even have a late night menu too. Sometimes, people are still lining up to get in at 10pm.

The interior is quite cozy and they have a lot of booths. This place is not Japanese owned (most likely Chinese) so don’t come here expecting authentic, traditional Japanese cuisine.

Here is a picture of their Late Night Special Menu.

I like how they have Nigiri sushi for only 89 cents apiece and Sashimi for $4.25 (5 pieces).

Above is the Salmon/ Toro sashimi ($4.25) along with a Chopped Scallop ($2.95) and Unagi ($2.95) maki roll.

The salmon sashimi was pretty good, but the toro wasn’t. It definitely did not have the melt-in-your-mouth texture you want from toro.

Both of the maki rolls are pretty good considering the price. The sushi rice stayed intact and the unagi and chopped scallop were satisfactory.

This is the Crab and Tobiko Salad ($2.95) and we got it just to see what it looked like. It’s essentially a combination of julienne cucumbers (bottom), fake crab meat (middle part), and Japanese mayo and Tobiko (top).

It looks like this when you mix it all up. Haha, it actually looks kind of gross but it tasted okay. :P It had too much mayo though so I probably wouldn’t get this again.

Salmon Nigiri sushi ($0.89 ea) and a chopped scallop roll again.

On the right, there are two pieces of Negitoro Nigiri sushi, two pieces of Chopped Scallop Nigiri sushi, and one Amaebi Nigiri sushi ($0.89 ea). Pooh and Pooh^2 ordered this so I don’t know how it tasted.

This is the Chicken Teri-Don ($4.75) and I think Yoshi thought it was average. Not good not bad.

The Oyster Motoyaki ($1.99) looked really good. Pooh^2 ordered this and he enjoyed it a lot.

I was surprised when I first saw the Agedashi Tofu ($2.95) because there give you so many! For $2.95, I think this is a really good deal.

Another item I would likely get again is the Salmon Belly ($2.99). They give you two large pieces (in this picture, the other piece is hiding at the back) and it is perfectly grilled. Since it’s salmon belly, the meat is fatty and soft, and absolutely delicious.

I didn’t expect the Beef Udon ($4.75) to be very good but it actually surprised me with how flavourful it was. The udon noodles were also the frozen kind, not the bad quality ones you can buy for 50 cents at the grocery store.

DON’T GET THIS. This is called Ika Karaage ($3.95) which is basically deep fried squid. It sounded cool on paper but it was horrible. The batter was bad, the squid itself was bad, everything about this dish was bad.

I think Matsuyama is a decent place to go to for late night sushi if you don't want all-you-can-eat. The food is not amazing but it's good enough to justify the price.

Based on these reasons:
  • parking is horrible in front so be patient =.=
  • they open until very late so great for coming after an evening movie
  • Just don't get their Ika Karaage and you'll be fine

Service Rating: 2.5/5
Food Rating: 3/5
Price: $$ ($10-20)

Overall Rating: 2.5/5

Happy Eating!

  1. I have a friend called Pooh too! Lol...
I had lunch at Matsuyama with my coworkers, and that's where I had the super slimy raw shrimp! Yuck... and the rest of the fish didn't taste fresh either. And the rice was very sour :(

I actually think it's an okay place to go to for late night. Have you tried their late night? Or you won't even bother returning again? haha

  4. Haha aww!! But so true. I had a taste of work life with my co-op and at the end of each day, I would be so mentally tired to do anything but go home and sleep!
