Steph (krispybites), Janice (goodeat), and I came to The
Noodle Box right after our chocolate adventure at Thomas Haas because it was
nearby and Janice had two gift certificates to redeem here.
The Noodle Box reminded me of Flaming Wok and those other ‘Asian’
restaurants that are catered to the non-Asian demographic. These restaurants
are usually the ones I avoid (obviously because I’m Asian and I don’t find their
product ‘authentic’), but since Janice was kind enough to let us share her gift
certificates, I was not going to turn it down. :)
Here is their take out menu (click on it to enlarge). I find their prices quite steep
for a bowl of noodles (some are $16!!) but that’s just me.
So first up was the Singapore
Cashew Curry + Prawns ($14) and the portion was actually much bigger than I
anticipated. However, I was disappointed to find that high quantity = low
quality. It certainly wasn’t horrible, but the noodles were a bit dry and grainy.
As well, we chose mild for the spicy level but it was VERY spicy.
I would have preferred the bean sprouts to be blanched so
that they are not completely raw. Also, roasted instead of raw cashews would’ve
been nice too.
The second noodle we ordered was the Spicy Peanut Noodle Box + Prawns ($14) and this was recommended by
Janice because she said this was their signature dish.
This was significantly better than the Singapore Cashew
Curry, but it was still not good enough for me to pay fourteen bucks for this
in the future. The sauce to noodle ratio was good, the prawns were plump, and
the peanut was very pronounced in this dish. I would definitely recommend this
dish if you want to try out The Noodle Box.
Because we were still full from the chocolate, we couldn’t
finish both of the noodles. Their takeout packaging is very cool and it reminds
me of the stereotypical Chinese takeout boxes that actors eat from in the
movies.
Anyways, this place is alright. The service is great and the food is decent, but don't expect to get authentic Asian food here. As for myself, I would not come back again.
Service Rating: 3.5/5
Food Rating: 2.5/5
Price: $$ ($10-20)
Overall Rating: 2.5/5
Happy Eating!
Blech :P
ReplyDeleteIt was alright... The curry was horrible, but the peanut was bearable. Still I wouldn't pay $14 for food court standard.
Agreed. :P
DeleteI live in Victoria and the Noodle Box here is pretty good. I agree that it's "non-Asian Asian" but it's still pretty good stuff in general. I notice you went for the mild... I've managed to work my way up to Xtra Hot so far and they now have a new heat level using the ghost chili, which is allegedly the hottest pepper in the world!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah I saw their signs about the intense "ghost chili" when I was there! I wonder how hot and fire breathing it actually is? If you do end up trying the ghost chili, let me know how it goes!
