I’ve always loved substituting regular fries with yam fries
when I eat out because I find them more flavourful and hearty. Did you
know that it is incredibly easy to make these at home?! I didn’t until
recently!
All you need are a few yams, 2 tablespoons of EVOO (extra
virgin olive oil), sea salt and cracked black pepper. Easy eh?
You first cut the yams up into strips (I like to leave the
skin on), rub them with olive oil, then sprinkle the salt and pepper and arrange
them on a baking sheet.
Bake them for approximately 20 minutes in the oven (400
degrees). If the fries are not soft to your liking, leave them in for a bit
longer.
Trust me guys, these fries are DELICIOUS and so healthy!
Yams are a good source of energy and are only 118 calories per 100g. It also
contains a good amount of Vitamin C, A, B, potassium, copper, iron, and antioxidants
which will aid in night vision, maintaining healthy skin, immune function,
anti-aging, wound healing, bone growth, and protection from lung and oral
cavity cancers.
Hope you enjoy the recipe, and...
Happy Eating!
awesome idea! I saw there were frozen yam fries at Costco and was a bit tempted, but didn't like the idea of eating so much deep-fried stuff. So baking (real) yams are almost just as good?
ReplyDeleteYup, they are almost just as good! I think though if you like crispier texture, cut them into smaller strips than I did (so as thin as McDonald's fries) and they will taste even more like regular fries. :D
ReplyDeleteIf you go to Safeway or Save On Foods, in their deli, they usually have wedges. They are cooked via the method you mentioned. Of course, they are regular potatoes, not yam fries. As for myself, I would just steam or bake it and make a mash (no dairy required, but butter helps!). If I were to make them like fries, as you did, I would drizzle some oil, toss some herbs (thyme?) and bake it with some rosemary on top. Even better, if you were roasting pork! :)
ReplyDelete@KimHo: Yam fries are sooo good though!!! I like yam fries more than the potato wedges.
ReplyDeleteI'd probably make my own weird wasabi mayo sauce or something to dip the yam fries in. There was a stand at the nightmarket that had some weird dips and it was interesting/good
@KimHo: Yum! Adding herbs like rosemary or thyme sounds delicious! I also love to steam and mash yams as well because yams are so flavourful on it's own unlike regular potatoes :P
ReplyDelete@Janice: Oh my gosh I actually did try dipping yam fries in wasabi mayo before! Sadly it tasted a little weird so I might stick with the standard chipotle mayo. :P Altho other dips like curry, garlic, or herb sounds kinda cool too!
